How do sleep disorders affect health?

Healthy sleep is the source of health. However, the number of people in Latvia suffering from sleep disorders such as insomnia, waking up at night, feeling unrested, and having bad dreams is rapidly increasing, according to a study conducted in the spring of 2024. How lack of sleep and sleep disorders affect health and why it is important to sleep well and get enough rest - let's look into this in this article.

A total of 75% of Latvian residents have experienced various sleep disorders over the past month; 49% of residents experience sleep disorders once or several times a week or even every night, while 18% experience them several times a month. Only every fifth Latvian resident, or 19%, has not experienced sleep disorders during this period, according to a survey conducted in March of this year via the internet by the leading research and consulting company in Latvia, Kantar. Commenting on the data, the authors of the study note that 'healthy sleep is one of the pillars of health.'

“Poor sleep, lack of rest, and sleep disorders cause fatigue, reduce productivity, and increase the risk of disease,” says pharmacist Andrejs Nikolajevs in response to the statistics. “Lack of sleep affects various body systems, including the cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, and nervous systems, as well as accelerates skin aging processes. Even a few nights of poor sleep can increase blood sugar levels and negatively affect health. Long-term sleep disorders and sleep deprivation affect the functioning of the immune system: lack of sleep weakensthe body's ability to resist various viruses. It is also worth mentioning that, according to studies, insufficient sleep increases the risk of obesity in humans, because lack of sleep affects hormones responsible for appetite regulation,” explains the specialist and continues: “The impact of sleep disorders on cognitive and physical functions, as well as memory, is also important. Sleep disorders disrupt the internal balance and cause internal restlessness, anxiety, and stress,” says Andrejs Nikolajevs.

"Thanks to the melatonin in its composition, it helps to fall asleep faster and makes sleep deeper. The preparation also contains B group vitamins and glycine, which promote the normal functioning of the nervous system and reduce psycho-emotional tension. Being a natural product, the preparation NERVOSTRONG® SLEEP FORMULA also contains time-tested plant extracts - ashwagandha root extract, valerian root extract, lemon balm leaf extract, as well as passionflower herb and hop cone extract. Thanks to the unique formula of the preparation, sleep quality improves," so he says.
